In part one of our blog series, we discussed a few things that you can do to help ensure that your wedding gigs go smoothly this summer. Continuing our series in part two, we’ll take a look at a handful of tips to help you as you make specific preparations for your upcoming wedding gigs.
Perfect Practice Makes Perfect
We all know the old adage of “practice makes perfect,” but there’s more to it than that. Casually playing a few songs here and there before your wedding gig won’t be enough; you need to be completely prepared for everything that is expected of you by the couple and their guests. Bandleader and DJ extraordinaire Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson has been known to say that more than “practice makes perfect,” it’s truly “perfect practice” that provides you with the training and preparation that you need in mastering your craft.
So how does this transfer to succeeding at your upcoming wedding gigs? Chances are, there are going to be elements of your wedding performance that you’ve either never done before, or that you haven’t done in a while. You’ll have to make announcements and introductions, as well as generally entertain a crowd for which you have never performed. In addition to this, practicing the parts of your performance that you may be more familiar with will only help strengthen it overall. Working on your transitions between songs and making sure that they fit with the unfamiliar elements will ensure a smooth and seamless performance. Whether it’s your first wedding or fifth, putting in the practice beforehand will make you come off as a seasoned professional, much to the delight of the couple and their guests.
Have Reliable Equipment
We’ve all been there: the night that our otherwise trustworthy gear has caused us problems prior to or during our performance. While accidents happen, they can sometimes cause issues during an otherwise flawless performance. While something like this is understandable in relation to a live gig or party, things are a bit different when it comes to weddings. As we mentioned in our previous post, weddings are professional occasions, and you were hired by the couple with the expectation that you’ll be handling the evening with a level of class and professionalism. This night is incredibly important to the couple and their guests, so more than a traditional gig, making sure that you have reliable gear is key when DJing a wedding.
One of the easiest ways to ensure that you have reliable gear comes from our previous point: practice. In practicing, not only will you be prepared for the evening and the services that the couple wants, you’ll also be using the exact same equipment that you’ll be using for the wedding. While doing this, make sure to pay close attention to your equipment and its functionality. Are there are any cables or power supplies that need to be replaced? Is there a part missing that could turn into a larger problem while performing? Do you have an adequate way to transport your equipment that will protect it during transit to and from the venue? Do you have high-quality files of all the songs needed for the occasion? These are all great things to keep in mind in preparation for your gig, as it will help ensure that your performance will end up exactly as you hoped it to, free of any technical-related hiccups.
